Sashiko: Art of Mending

Mending and Sewing Classes

Involved in design and manufacturing for over 10 years, Christoph is the founder of Kryszstof_ and the Whakamau Project.
His label specialises in gender & size-neutral garments, crafted ethically from natural fibres.

  • Traditionally, the Japanese embroidery technique of Sashiko consists of running simple hand stitches to reinforce cloth.

    This course will produce a handful of samples as a point of reference. Students are invited to bring in their own garments towards the end of the lesson to under go their own repair work. The first hour of this lesson will cover demonstrations of different techniques on sample material.
    Students will take hand at repairing their own garment(s) or further explore the sampling from the rest of the lesson.

    What to bring: just yourself and a couple of items you would like to repair.

  • In the Sky T. Shirt course you will learn techniques to sew knitwear garments with just one machine.

    This lesson is geared towards the entry level student focusing on the basics of knitwear handling.

    Pieces and fabrics will be pre-cut and provided ample time to produce a finished product.

    This course will have a duration of approximately 3hrs. The first half hour of the course will be dedicated to sampling the seams necessary for constructing the Skye T.

    You will learn how to sew a plain seam with mock overlocking, how to topstitch and few other techniques such as bound seam for shoulder stabilisation, neck ribbing application and hem folding.

    The following hour and a half is spent joining together the body of the garment using the techniques previously demonstrated.

    Around halfway through this section students are welcome to take a quick 15min break if desired.

    The last hour of the class focuses on attaching the neck band and finishing your garment to completion.

  • This class teaches the pupil a step-by-step method for replicating the Tunic Dress from the Kryszstof_ label.

    Option without pockets and with a machine-sewn facing: course will run over 2 workshops and is priced at $440 per person.

    The Tunic Dress version with pockets will be delivered over three workshops and is priced at $580 per person.

    The first workshop covers basic pattern-altering skills, giving the pupil the option to create a custom-fitted garment. This session then moves into preparation for the sewing process, including cutting out fabric, preparing facings, and beginning the pockets.

    In the second workshop, the pupil will work on sewing the body of the garment and inserting the neck facing. Before the end of this session, there will be a tutorial on invisible hand stitching. As homework, the pupil will take the neck facing and garment body home to stitch by hand in their own time.

    The third and final workshop focuses on finishing techniques, including attaching the sleeves and hemming the garment.

  • This course focuses on comprehensive pattern development.

    You will work with a half scale block and learn to create a simple pattern from scratch. Over the lesson techniques such as dart manipulation, pleating and flare will be demonstrated so you will able to create a half scale pattern of your own design.

    This course will have a duration of approximately 3.5hrs. The first 2 hours of this lesson will cover demonstrations of basic practices of pattern manipulation.

    You will then apply your newly learned stills and under go development of your own half scale pattern.

    This lesson leans into Part II of Patterning Basics in which you will be able to scale up your design and produce a full scale version or even a completed garment.
