Stella’s
Textile Craft Workshops

Stella has been practicing embroidery and fibre crafts since her late teens and is inspired by a lifelong passion for all things thread, fibre and fabric. She has a wide experience as a tutor in community contexts ; she believes small changes at a personal level can make a big difference on the global issues of our time.
Stella’s workshops have a capacity of 4 or 5 attendees so students can be supported and encouraged.

  • Learn the ins and outs, rounds and turns of sock knitting! You will gain skills in a fun craft niche that also has a lovely practicality!

    Join craft tutor Stella Carruthers as she teaches the basic principles of knitting socks. Utilise a mini sock pattern to learn all the techniques – how to knit in the round using the magic loop technique, turning a heel, foot shaping and the final toe grafting.

    This programme goes over 3 sessions of 2.30hrs each. That’s a total of 7.5hrs of teaching time.

    LEVEL
    Students should be familiar with basic techniques such as cast on, make knit and purl stitches.

  • Join craft Stellas as she teaches the basic principles of knitting in this fun, informative and supportive class.

    Come along and learn the essential building blocks of knitting, using only knitting needles, yarn and your hands!

    The programme will run for a period of 6 weeks, back to back. That's a total of 12 hours teaching time (2 hrs each class). You have the option to add a beginner's kit at $12. It includes one set of 4mm knitting needles and 1 ball wool yarn.

  • Be inspired by the circular cycles of the natural world with a stitched mandala workshop.

    Use the simple embroidery stitch of couching to start work on an embroidered mandala and benefit from the meditative act of slow stitching. Engage with low waste textile practices as you reuse fibre scraps. Come along and enjoy sewing in a social space.

    This course has a capacity of 4 attendees.

  • If embroidery is drawing with thread, then this workshop is all about doodling designs and having fun with colour and line.

    Start work on making a lovely embroidery piece to decorate your home with or give as a gift. Utilise the embroidery hoop you will be using in the workshop to show off your finished work for super easy display. Explore with different fibres and threads to achieve a variety of textures and lines. Students will learn 10 embroidery stitches while also having the space to socialise and stitch.

    You will be supported to explore your creativity to make a textile artwork that is uniquely your own!

    For your convenience, your tutor has put together an embroidery kit for the workshop. You will be able to purchase this kit directly from the tutor on the day of your workshop. This kit will be available for purchase for an extra $40.

  • Engage with a traditional artform in a new contemporary context as you explore free form embroidery.

    Apply upcycling principles and an awareness of textile waste to create a unique piece of art. Build on the idea of eco-textiles and slow stitching as a movement and make the whole item by hand. In this class you will create a simple embroidery design that uses recycled fabrics and threads. Learn how to make yarn from old t-shirts. Master the simple stitch technique of couching. Understand how to finish the work so your creation can be displayed using an embroidery hoop. You have an option to purchase a kit priced at $36. It includes: an embroidery hoop, backing fabric, needle and 5 colours embroidery floss + access to the tutors collection of threads. Be welcomed into a space where you can connect with others as you sew in a friendly and fun environment.

  • Join us for an afternoon of sustainable living inspired fibre crafting.

    Stella will guide you step by step on how to make a simple crochet produce bag out of cotton. Enjoy a meditative craft form through learning some basic fibre craft techniques. Engage with a beginner’s crochet project and do something positive for the planet at the same time!

  • The twists and turns of cable knitting may look complex, but it is a deceptively simple knitting technique!

    Stella teaches the core principles of cable knitting in a small class size that enables more one on one time with the tutor. You will learn the twists of a basic cable stitch using a cable needle and how to read a cable pattern and diagram.

    We recommend buying your kit from one of your partner shop. (Knit World on Willis St, Made Marion on Cuba or Busy Bee Quilt shop in Kilbirnie).

    For your convenience, you will have the option to purchase your kit from the tutor on the day (valued at $16). Cable Kit includes: 1 set 4mm knitting needles, 1 cable needle and 1 ball wool yarn.

    LEVEL: basic knitting skills such as cast on and off, knit and purl.

    Sunday 24th May
    Time: 1.30 ~ 4pm

  • Join craft artist Stella Carruthers for this two-hour workshop explaining some of the more technical aspects of knitting.

    Learn how to read a knitting pattern and decipher the shorthand terminology.

    Practice the wraps per inch hack to determine yarn weight and learn about tension and why gauge swatches are important.

    What to bring: just your notebook and a pen.

  • Join craft artist Stella Carruthers to make a crochet cuff that you can enjoy yourself or give to a friend.

    Learn several stitches including making a chain, half double, single crochet and fan stitch. Enjoy being able to practice new techniques in a supportive environment. This is a great project to use up scrap yarn at the end of other projects.

  • Learn how to make a simple crochet bracelet that you can enjoy yourself or give to friends.

    Learn how to make a chain of stitches. Practice the basic single crochet stitch and have the opportunity to practice it multiple times.

    Have fun finishing your project with a bright button as a fastening.

    This is a teen’s friendly workshop.

  • Be inspired by the constellations and create a celestial inspired free-form embroidery to celebrate Matariki.

    Capture star shapes on fabric with a range of simple stitches as you learn basic embroidery techniques and sew in a social space.
